The summer is almost gone, and autumn is just around the corner. It was a nice summer here, BH
But the most meaningful summer I've had, was many years ago when I volunteered in a daycamp for children with special needs. The ratio was one to two campers per counselor. And the bond they built was amazing as they went on field trips and did different activities like drama plays, sports, custume day etc. The joy that both the campers and counselors felt during that summer is priceless, and the memories, timeless.
I still do volunteering sometimes like Tomchei Shabbos on Thurs. and help pack boxes of food. On the one hand, it's nice to see friends there. But more than that, it's nice to be doing something to help others

Ps, there's more of this in a past post
A frum girl on the westcoast, and writing what's on my mind. Please check out my older post as well with different topics, thanks
In life, we can either let our experiences make us bitter, or we can channel that feeling towards being a good example in order to improve things.

watermelon shabbos
.
On Shabbos, it was really warm outside and inside. So natually, the best part of lunch was the watermelon. My sister's friend and I then decided that it would be interesting for us to make a fan page on Facebook called, 'Watermelon Shabbos'. Haven't started it yet, but it should be interesting.

Be careful
I was reading something and the person made a good point in regards to actions and consequences. We should each try to be careful with our actions, and if we do something wrong, we should take responsibility for it.
We learn in diff sources like Pirkei Avos and Missilas Yesharim about being cautious and staying away from bad activities that will cause us trouble.
Sometimes, the evil inclination tries to tempt us and make us mess up. But we can and should try to overcome it. This way we improve in our self growth and become better than before and move forward.
Also, I feel that just like we want others to be understanding of us and that we're just human, we should also be understanding of others, they're just human too. However, we still need to pause and think clearly about what we are about to do and what the consequences might be. - Sometimes, we might become confused because when we want something, the evil inclination helps to justify it. There's a story I heard from a lecturer about a soldier in the desert who thought he saw water, but it was just sand. His friend tells him, if you see the sun in it, then it's water. Sure enough, there was no reflecting sun. So too, we should ask ourselves if this activity we're thinking of has Hashem's reflection in it. If it doesn't, then it's not a good idea.

Lesson from ECE
'
One really good lesson that I learned while taking early childhood education is active listening. This is very important for both teachers and parents.
Have you ever experienced a child repeating something over and over until you answered them? Or in another situation, a child might be feeling sad, but feels better when someone acknowledges how they feel. For example, the preschool teacher could say, 'I understand, it's hard for you to be away from your mom.'
It also works for adults, but in a different way. For example, I was talking to a friend and they were going through a hard time and told me about what happened and how they felt. I looked at the message they emailed me and acknoweledge point by point what they said. For example, 'I agree, it can be very hard when.....'
They wrote back to me saying that I was right on, and then they jokingly said, "It's like your in my head."
The important thing here is that eventhough they still felt kind of down, they felt a little better because of the support from a friend. It doesn't always have to be with words though. sometimes, it could be just listening to them and giving a hug.

Interesting how the brain works
I wrote about this a long while ago. However, recently someone sent me an email mentioning this scrambled paragragh and how we can still read it. And so I decided to mention it again because it's interesting.

Awe and Love
'
I was listening to a lecture and the speaker mentioned about awe and love. He said that Yiras Hashem(fear of G-d) does not mean terror. The word yira is connected to the word ro'eh(see)
For example, in a relationship, a person should see the preciousness of the other and respect the other person. From there, the person goes on to work on love. Respect motivates us to notice the other and honor them; we don't dream of hurting the relationship we have. - Love motivates us to be close to them -
So too, during this time, we should work on noticing Hashem in our life who gives us both pleasent things and challenges, which we see in retrospect is for the best. And we should work on respecting Him and the people around us. Plus, we should be aware that when we do something wrong, we hurt the relationship, which in turn makes us grow apart from each other. However, it can be mended and healed if we put in the effort to do so. It's best of course, to try not to mess up, but of course it's happens b/c we're human, and so there's teshuva.
Once we have respect for the other, we buid the love

Strengthening Kavana
For many of us, it is hard to have kavanah sometimes while praying. And sometimes we have it more than other times.
I think that inorder for us to improve in our kavanah, we need to work on strengthening our relationship with Hashem first. We should each find our own thing to help us with this. For example, it can be working on personally talking to G-d while in your room or somewhere else, or we can use song and sing from the heart which helps to lift us up, or we can make a list of things we're grateful for having, etc. This way we strengthen our connection to Hashem and improve our kavanah.
What so important about this closeness? It's because deep down, this is what our soul needs. It doesn't want to be caught up in the sea of materalism. It wants to be connected to it's Source. Thus we have Torah, mitzvos, and prayer to do that. And there are, within Jewish law, many different ways to do it. - Growth is not meant to be easy, but take effort, because then it is internally rewarding. It's kind of like receiveing an A in calculus.
Our mission here in this world is to spread goodness in the world and connect to Hashem. Of course, sometimes we mess up because we're human. However, we can and should pick ourself back up and go forward.
----
Speaking of what I mentioned above about music, here's a video below of a kumzits. It reminds me of when me and my girlfriends to use sing together at my friends house. This vid is of the Yaakov chesed band and their friends.

Try to judge favorably
=
This Elul and Tishrei, lets try to judge favorably others. Sure people can be irritating sometimes. But our test is to not go with our anger impulse, but to try to be understanding of each other. I agree that people need to improve themselves. But holding a grudge against them is not going to help. If we want to improve the situation, we should personally speak to someone who might be able to do something to help. - Remember, G-d judges us the way we judge others

Word of encouragment, light at the end of the tunnel
With different situations going on both in our own lives and around the world, we are going through a lot. And things look very bleak sometimes.
However, we've gotten through other things, and we will overcome this too, especially if we stick together.
What we say in Tehillim 27 this Elul, is very relevent, and also can be comforting. The message is there, what ever happens, we should trust in Hashem, He's our protector;
We might wonder where He is sometimes when diff things happen. But we should try to have faith that everything will work out for the best, and we should do what we can to help out.
As it says at the end of the chapter, 'Strengthen yourself and He will put courage in your heart.'

Interesting sayings
From Jr.co.il/humor
The time is at hand when the wearing of a prayer shawl and
skullcap will not bar a man from the White House, unless, of course, the man is Jewish.
-- Jules Farber
The remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she
served us nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been
found.
-- Calvin Trillin
"Never doubt that a small group of dedicated citizens can change
the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
-- Margaret Mead
Here's some funny labels. These labels were probably made so people can't say they didn't know
On a bar of Dial soap: "Directions: Use like regular soap."
(and that would be how???....)
On some Swanson frozen dinners: "Serving suggestion: Defrost."
(but, it's "just" a suggestion)
On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom):
"Do not turn upside down."
(well...duh, a bit late, huh)!
On Marks & Spencer Bread Pudding:"Product will be hot after heating."
(...That one is for the blonde in all of us...)

Be thankful when things are pleasent, and have emunah(faith) when things are challenging. Here's the vid

Don't sweat it (the small things)
The city of happiness is in the state of mind. A friend of mine wrote that on their FB status.
Sometimes we have little annoyances and sometimes big ones. With the little ones, we should practice the phrase, don’t sweat the small stuff. For example, we are looking for something around the house and can’t find it. This can be very frustrating. However, we should pause and put it into perspective. If it’s something that's not so important, then stop and continue another time. If it’s important, then keep looking and have patience.
Or lets say we are in the car and there is a lot of traffic. This can be very annoying also. However, if we focus on something else in the meantime like a CD, then we reduce our stress. It’s all a matter of how we choose to deal with things. We can be angry and stressed, or we can say to ourselves, it’s just one of those things, and deal with it calmly. Takes a lot of discipline, but it’s worth it in order to live a less stressful, and more pleasant life.
One thing that helps is to realize that everything has a reason. We might not know the reason, but we know it’s there. I remember someone saying a long while ago that her house was robbed during the day when no one was home. - This is huge for anyone, I’m sure it was for her too at the moment. But when she mentioned it to me and someone else, she said that she’s grateful that she and her family are okay Baruch Hashem, and she mentioned about it being a kaporah(atonement).
Also, more recently, something happened with me in which I slipped on the back stairs at home. It hurt, but BH I’m okay.
If it’s a small thing like the internet not working, be glad it’s a small thing and be patient. If something bigger happens but you’re all okay, be glad for that.
Have a good rest of the week :)

Be a good example
Here's a great post at the link below that CJ Srullowitz wrote about being careful and caring; basically be a good example
He gives a similar example I heard a while ago. When we're at a store, we should put down our cell phone and pay attention to the cashier. I remember hearing a story about someone who was shopping, and they thought the other shopper was talking to them and so they answered. The person looked at them strangely, and then the first person realized that the other one is wearing a bluetooth, lol.
Another example he gives is greeting people in the morning and how it makes a difference
She's given two types of protection
One physical, the other spiritual.
Both help in different ways
Both are needed;
The physical is easy to see,
The brave individuals who do
so much for us.
The spiritual though is harder to notice;
However, the positive energy
from prayer, learning and
good deeds, helps in many ways
and makes an impact.
We might become discouraged,
With diff things going on.
However, don't lose hope;
Our job is to stay strong
With each other and Hashem

btw, there's a great message at this link about holding on during these times Click here

On the purpose and the meaning of...
I'm putting this with my earlier posts
Anyway in regards to modesty, it can be hard for many to keep hearing in the communtity about tznius this and tznius that, and you feel like you want people to talk about something else, a different topic. - Plus, it's hard for some to be limited in clothing options and behaviors.
At first, this mitzva looks very small compared to other things we need to do. But spiritually, it's just as important as shabbos and good middos(traits) and keeping kosher. - With good middos, we understand the importance because we see the impact it has all around. However with spir things like shabbos and tznius etc, it's difficult to see the impact since it's spiritual. Maybe people wouldn't have such a hard time with tznuis if it wasn't mentioned so much, and there weren't so many restrictions in certain places. I feel, there should be a balance, like for ex. when I saw a song and dance performance for women only, and they had a lot of beautiful dancing.
What's so important about this mitzvah? The importance is to protect our holiness that's within by covering ourselves, like puting a baseball card in a case, or covering a precious Torah scroll. Of course, being tznius is just one way to keep ourself and our home holy. There are other things we need to do as well, for example, family purity and mikva, and make an effort(both spouses) to keep a peaceful home by communicating calmly, and so on.
Being tznius can actually be a beautiful thing because then people focus on our inner beauty and what's in our mind and heart, instead of only our body; Think of it like this, we are children of the King and should look the part by dressing modestly. There are plenty of clothes out there that are both modest and stylish at the same time. Besides this, we also need to act appropriately, so our wisdom and other good traits shine through.
Men too should also be modest. I spoke to someone once who mentioned that he use to wear whatever. And then he went with a friend to a traffic court to help him with something, and they both wore nice clothes. Then he realized that if he chooses to wear nice clothes in front of a human judge, how much more so should he when he davens before Hashem.
While it might be hard for some, we just need to make sure that our body, elbows and knees are covered, and that it’s not so tight that our form shows. As for head coverings, there’s many choices. - I prefer a hat or tichel or scarf when I marry because a wig looks too real, and I feel misses the point. Although, I would combine a hat with a wig. :)
In general, the many mitzvos we Jews have, both the ones b/t person & person, and the ones b/t person and G-d, help us to be holy, connect to G-d, and spread light throughout the world.

7 enjoyable things
The Jewish side tagged me to do this assignment of mentioning 7 things that I love.
Here we go
1. I enjoy music, many different kinds. Rock, dance, and mellow music to name a few.
Sometimes, when I listen, I picture things like colors. For instance, a song might make me think of the color blue, and another song might be green etc. Music has the amazing power to uplift us and take us to another place. Nice music speaks to the soul.
2. I enjoy reading and writing. I’m actually working a story that I have been working on for a while. Reading also takes us away. A good novel can have you in it’s grip until the last page. Then there is the sadness of it being over. I remember continuing to think for awhile of the books I have read. A really good one stays with you.
3. My neighborhood. I like that my block is lively with kids playing and so on. Plus, I enjoy the scenery, especially after it rained and the view looks screaky clean. The sky is a mixture of blue, white and silver, and the sun shines brightly through the trees on the block.
4. Being with friends -- Before some of my friends moved, we use to meet every shabbos at their house for shalosh seudos. I still have a few here which is nice, BH. I heard someone mention something beautiful about the word yedid (beloved friend) The word is spelled yud, daled, yud, daled. These two letters spell yad(hand) The meaning is that yedidim go hand in hand. I also heard something about the word chaim. We say the plural chaim instead of chai because life is suppose to be lived with others.
5. I enjoy chocolate immensely. Guess that’s normal. I use to only like milk chocolate, but I’ve grown accustomed to dark chocolate as well because it’s healthier. Still like the other more though.
6. I love that Baruch Hashem, He’s given me an understanding about different things. I like to gather good info and share it with others. I enjoy helping others in some way, either intellectually, emotionally, physically, spiritually. It’s very important for us to feel for others, like if someone needs emotional support, we should do what we can, or at least just be there.
7 Sitting on the sofa and relaxing. It’s good to relax once in a while.
I tag frumstepper dixieyid Thinking out loud ClooJew Sara Rivka floatingreflection and whoever else wants to do it
Saw this somewhere, 'The city of happiness is in the state of mind.' Meaning, happiness is a choice
