In life, we can either let our experiences make us bitter, or we can channel that feeling towards being a good example in order to improve things.

Taking Initiative

I'm working towards being a preschool teacher and right now I'm an assistant. A while ago when I was taking a class where you do interning in a school, the thing that always slowed me down was my fear of not knowing what to do in certain situations. For instance, when there was a conflict between two kids over a toy, I would freeze and forget what to do and say. And so I would get someone else to handle it. Also, sometimes when the teacher wants the kids to move on to another activity and they want to keep playing, it's hard to get them to listen and stop. And so all the challenging things I would let the other teachers there do.

Recently though, I've decided that the only way I'll learn is if I do it myself so I can get the practice. Mainly because this teacher put me to task. And I thought to myself, she's right. I can do it if I just take iniative and try hard enough. The problem was I was too soft and so the kids wouldn't listen to me when I would tell them to stop playing and come to the carpet. And so I decided to try something else. I took the toy out of their hands, put it away and then lead them to the carpet.

I think working at the this school has really helped me to gain confidence in myself, BH.

It's the best way of learning, by doing it alone, maybe you'll make a mistake, it can happen but if you'll learn from them you'll have the potential to become a great teacher!

Hi! Thanks for visiting my blog- i thought turnabout's fair play!
Besides a fear of skiing, we also share the whole initiative thing. It doesn't come up so much in my teaching job, but only because no one else will do it. But in life in general, I find myself wandering streets instead of just asking for directions, agonizing over decisions, and sitting back while others make plans...It's something I'm definitely working on. Good luck with your efforts-it sounds like you're getting much better at it!

David, yep

Okee, I can relate to the sitting back part. Sometimes I need to give myself an extra push.
Thanks for visiting too.
